Hi Areej,

it is good that you are doing this. Maybe I wasn't quite clear in my previous message. If we put the feature of annotated bibliographies on to the DIOC, we need to make sure it is sustainable. I don't want to have a few entries and then it dies. That is my main concern. This is why I was asking about putting a group together. That way, you have several people involved who can, for instance, do an article review when the lead person does not have time.

If we can figure out a sustainable process, then I'm willing to do it. We could supply you with copies of articles since we keep the DIOC Publication Archive up-to-date, anyway.

Thanks

Thank you very much for your replay.

I recieved your replay while I am preparing annotated bibilography to post here about "Digital Signature of Electronic Dental Record" by Ivan Toshio Maruoa and Hiroshi Maruoa in the American Journal of Orthodontic

Unfortunately, I do not have access to anyone in any library, and usually I read the the articles with free access, if the review of article, with a restricted access, is interested to me I would ask a colleague who have a library access.

Regarding a group? did you Dr. mean online group? that will be applicable.

The process as I though will be posting an annotated bibliography to any published article of interest or relevant to Dental Informatics

Thank you very much and appreciated your efforts.

Dear Areej,

Thanks. It would be great if you could do it. But, before we start it we have to think about how make this work in the long term. I don't really want to start on an annotated bibliography for the DIOC and then suddenly stop it. Do you have any suggestions for the process? Do you have access to someone from a library? Could you put a process/group together? If we could figure out a process that works, I think it would be good for the DIOC. The most logical place to post this would be either in the publication archive or in the learning center.

Looking forward to your ideas.

Thanks

Dear Areej,

Thanks for your suggestion! I think it is a very good one. You may have noticed the Publication Archive in the DIOC (see http://www.dentalinformatics.org/pubarchive/) which provides access to over 2,300 articles on informatics and IT in dentistry. It currently can only include MEDLINE articles, but if you have any suggestions for articles that are not already in there, please let us know. I also like your idea of an annotated bibliography, but for that we would need someone (or a small group of people) who would manage this.

Thanks

Titus and the DIOC Community:
I do believe that coordinated work on a Common EHR Model will be productive and complementary to the Messaging conventions that HITSP completed in April 2010. Work of ADA SCDI with ASTM E-31, HL7, X12N, NCPDP, and the other SDOs in Health Informatics can lead to a Common Model for the EHR (which is the repository for Individual Health data and source of Population Health data) Conceptual Content; this Conceptual Content is the starting point for applying Implementing Technology (including messaging) for building Health Enterprise Information Architectures using Enterprise View, Life Cycle Principles). Mark can tell you how the ADA SCDI and ASTM E-31 joint work over the years has addressed these points. I will need to study the CIMI website further but the Open EHR effort is based on the original VA effort and the VA VISTA architecture reflects these ideas. Mark knows that we have been pursuing how the CSO standards corrdination effort can lead to economic, effective common conventionss that will benefit implementors/suppliers. The DIOC Community can help produce an oral health community common view via joint work with ADA SCDI and its participation in the SCO effort; this view can then be conveyed via the formal/CPE education effort via DIOC's work with the Dental School users of the AxiUm EHR architecture used in a clear majority of Dental Schools including Pitt. All of these threads need to be directed to work together. I look forward to the ideas discussed in SCDI WG 11.1.

Hi everybody,

Quite a few leading organizations in healthcare, such as HL7, IHTSDO, the NIH, NHS Connecting for Health and others, have chosen to pursue the Clinical Information Modeling Initiative (CIMI) (http://www.openehr.org/326-OE). From their Website:

"The Clinical Information Modeling Initiative is an international collaboration that is dedicated to providing a common format for detailed specifications for the representation of health information content so that semantically interoperable information may be created and shared in health records, messages and documents."

With this message, I wanted to make people aware of this effort since it will also affect dentistry. I also have a question.

One thing I'm wondering about is whether we really need another modeling effort for healthcare. I don't think we have a shortage of models. But, we do have is a shortage of very general, simple and effective ways to exchange health information.

I am wondering what people think about what strategy/ies would be most promising to get healthcare information exchange going at a broad and simple level. I'm not sure our current processes will get us there.

Thanks

since not many things have been published about EHRs in dental schools, I wanted to list a few publications that I knew of, in the hope that others might be able to add whatever else is out there:

- Walji et al. Factors influencing implementation and outcomes of a dental electronic patient record system. Journal of dental education 73(5):589-600, 2009 May (http://dentalinformatics.org/pubarchive/show_record.html?record_id=10077)

- Hill HK; Stewart DC; Ash JS: Health Information Technology Systems profoundly impact users: a case study in a dental school. Journal of dental education 74(4):434-45, 2010 Apr (http://dentalinformatics.org/pubarchive/show_record.html?record_id=9600)

- Atkinson JC; Zeller GG; Shah C: Electronic patient records for dental school clinics: more than paperless systems. Journal of dental education 66(5):634-42, 2002 May (http://dentalinformatics.org/pubarchive/show_record.html?record_id=10462)

So, if you have any other papers about EHRs in dental schools, please add them to this post.

Thanks
PS. Hi Tobias, thanks for your explanation of following topics from the other day. One problem that I am seeing is that it is not easy for DIOC members to follow things on the forum. Right now, you essentially have to check the forum manually when you want to see whether there are any new messages - too much work for pretty much everybody. I am not sure whether Jeannie has been in touch with you on this, but I think we should (1) allow DIOC members to follow the whole DIOC forum and/or (2) allow them to follow any of the subforums, like "Dental schools," "Dental software in practice," etc. This means that we have to make the "following" functionality available and obvious to use - for everybody. We should probably do some user testing on this.

That's an interesting question. To my knowledge, I haven't see that many studies that looked at how technology affects student's learning process especially when interacting with EHRs. The one paper that comes to my mind is by Dr. Heather Hill from OHSU which ia available at [www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov].

Hi Heiko/Thankam,

Thank you very much for putting this forum in place! I think this is a great idea and putting it onto DIOC will make sure that the discussion draws the broadest level of interest from schools and others.

One thing I am wondering about with regard to EHR use (which is mostly AxiUm use) in dental schools in the US is how we could more effectively develop best practices to get the most out of our systems. As a group, we are investing a huge amount of money, time and effort in implementing and running EHRs. But, we do not have good mechanisms to share what we learn collectively. Heather Hill's work (e.g. [www.dentalinformatics.com]) was one beginning of that, but I think it should be carried on even after her untimely death. I also think that a lot could be learned by discussing EHR use in dental education in the international context.

Thanks for pointing out the connection to COHRI. I think involving the COHRI members in the discussion is very important, as many of them are already DIOC members and have important roles for EHR use at their schools. Maybe we should send a special invitation to Elsbeth for distribution?

Thanks

Titus

P.S. I am checking "follow topic" on my reply here, but "email me about replies to this topic" is not checked by default. So, what does "follow topic" mean if emailing is not checked?

The closet I've seen to open source digital imaging systems are open source tools available to manage images. This one [sourceforge.net] has much of the storage, transmission and manipulation of DICOM images available in open source. You could pair it with viewers like Osirix. Yet I'm know sure a fully open source solution exists.

Dear Colleagues,

As you may know, currently most dental schools in the US have adopted Electronic Health Records (EHR) for patient care. In an effort to promote an open discussion about the use of EHR in clinical settings especially in dental schools, we are launching an online discussion forum at the Dental Informatics Online Community (DIOC) website [www.dentalinformatics.org]. We cordially invite you and your colleagues to post your comments and feedback on your experiences with your EHR in this forum. The objective of this forum is to foster an open communication on the use of EHR in dental school settings and collectively resolve and/or find solutions to issues related to using EHR in clinical settings.

Many studies in medicine demonstrate the benefits and drawbacks of using EHR for patient care. However, only limited studies are available on the use of EHR in dentistry. The DIOC was created with grant support from the National Library of Medicine (1-G08-LM-8667-1A1) to provide a networking platform for people interested in information technology in dentistry, to promote the development of dental information resources; and to disseminate research results and best practices. While COHRI is focused on research work towards standardization of information collected across dental schools, the forum in DIOC will provide a platform for dental educators, administrators, and technical staff to express the issues they face when interacting with EHR in their daily work. We envision that this online forum will fill the void of a venue that offers opportunity to discuss IT issues in clinical dentistry. In these difficult economic times, an online discussion forum provides a cost-effective and efficient means of communication among colleagues dispersed geographically.

We are interested in hearing your thoughts about this forum. So, please email or contact us.

Sincerely,
