Principal Investigator
Spallek, Heiko (89 ), DMD, PhD, MSBA(CIS) Associate Professor, Center for Dental Informatics and Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Information Management at the School of Dental Medicine with joint appointments as a core faculty member at the Department of Biomedical Informatics and at the School of Information Sciences, University of Pittsburgh. Since 1994, Dr. Spallek's research interests have focus on the development of Web-based educational resources for dental professionals. Dr. Spallek developed and directs a predoctoral course on computer applications in dentistry. He lectures in the NIDCR/NLM-funded postgraduate training program in DI. He published the first textbook on dental Internet applications in Germany (1997) and in the United States (1998).

Anderson, Patricia F (4 ), MILS, Head Librarian, Dentistry Library, University of Michigan. Dr. Anderson is the author and editor of The Medical Library Association’s Encyclopedic Guide to Searching and Finding Health Information on the Web (2004) (3 volumes). She was a member of the Program Committee for the NIH conference "Dental Informatics and Dental Research: Making the Connection," and searching consultant to the NIH Consensus Development Conference on Diagnosis and Management of Dental Caries Throughout Life.
Butler, Brian, PhD, Assistant Professor of Business Administration, Katz Graduate School of Business, University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Butler’s research interests focus on the modeling and development of virtual communities and the creation of systems for supporting reliable, knowledge work in complex environments. His research, which has appeared in MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Organization Science, and Communications of the ACM, has been supported by grants from the NSF and Microsoft.
Detlefsen, Ellen G, MS, MPhil, DLS, School of Information Sciences, Dept of Library and Information Science, University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Detlefsen is a tenured faculty member in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, with a joint appointment as a core faculty member with the Department of Biomedical Informatics in the School of Medicine. Her areas of expertise and teaching competence include biomedical and health sciences information, medical informatics, and resources and services for special populations such as patients, health care consumers, and the aging and their caregivers.
Koch, Sabine (11 ), PhD Research leader, Dept of Medical Sciences, Medical Informatics and Engineering, Uppsala University, Sweden. Dr. Koch has more than 10 years experience in scientific research on dental and medical informatics with special focus on digital imaging, dental radiography, integrated clinical workstations and human-computer interaction in medicine. She has authored and co-authored more than 25 publications on dental and medical informatics. She has been involved in both graduate and post graduate education in medical and dental informatics at Uppsala University, Sweden and Greifswald University, Germany.
Ramoni, Marco F, PhD, Assistant Professor of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine (Bioinformatics) at Harvard Medical School. He is also Associate Director of Bioinformatics at the Harvard Partners Center for Genetics and Genomics and Staff Scientist with the Informatics Program of Children’s Hospital in Boston. He is the principal investigator of the NSF funded project “Phenotyping Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms using Bayesian Networks” (2000).
Schleyer, Titus (102 ), DMD, PhD, (co-investigator), Associate Professor and Director, Center for Dental Informatics, University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Schleyer is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in dental informatics. He founded the first academic department of dental informatics in the U.S. and is the recipient of one of two NLM/NIDCR training grants for dental informatics, nationally. Dr. Schleyer has published extensively in a wide range of journals, and is co-author of the book “The Global Village of Dentistry: Internet, Intranet, and Online Services for Dental Professionals.” Dr. Schleyer is Associate Editor for Informatics and Technology at the Journal of the American Dental Association and a reviewer for several dental journals.

Weiss, Patricia (6 ), MLIS, Medical Reference Librarian with the University of Pittsburgh’s Health Sciences Library System will integrate DI research papers into the Community’s Publication Archive. In addition, Ms. Weiss will continue to update the Publication Archive during the project period.
Kreinacke, Marcos (10 ), Software Developer, will provide custom programming services needed to produce the proposed electronic environment. This will include development of the software core and the application modules.
Irwin, Jeannie Y (12 ), is the Project Manager of the DIOC. She will commit her time supporting the principal investigator in the preparation of interviews, data entry and initial analysis, conducting phone interviews, scheduling, and management of all communications, including support for the electronic collaborative environment for the core group. Jeannie is currently a PhD student in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh. Her thesis work is based in Dental Informatics.
